In a previous post on this blog, we dfive things to keep in mind when building a swimming pool. But we gave it some thought and realized that there were preventable pitfalls that most new pool owners unfortunately fall into. As much as we want you to focus on the positive aspects of pool building, you should also be aware of the missteps that can occur if you’re not careful.

With that in mind, here are seven common mistakes you should avoid when building your swimming pool. We limit the list to seven items, but of course there are a variety of factors to consider. For more about pool builder services in the Houston area, be sure to contact us and we’ll be happy to give you the information you need.

The Seven Nots in Swimming Pool Construction

1. Not keeping in mind that swimming pools are custom construction projects. Because pools aren’t mass-produced in an assembly line fashion, pool contractors have varying standards as far as construction materials and building standards are concerned. Therefore, be sure to find a contractor that you trust will build a high-quality pool that will last for years.

2. Not doing enough research into the experience and reputation of your swimming pool contractor. In this day and age, any pool builder worth its salt has a website that informs users of the types of services it offers. Investigate whether the builders you’re considering are accredited with the Better Business Bureau and use that as a basis for the contractors you will contact.

3. Not visiting the physical location of the swimming pool company. Internet research and contacting pool contractors via phone are great first steps, but seeing the business in person goes a long way. Determine for yourself whether the contractor will be able to handle any issues that may arise in the pool construction process and demonstrate courteous and professional behavior.

4. Not focusing on the fundamentals of swimming pool building. It may not be as exciting as the design aspects of pool building, but taking technical details such as hydraulic design and chemical management into account will keep your pool sanitary and ensure its use for years to come.

5. Not obtaining a swimming pool permit or considering safety issues. Research local Houston laws for residential pools to know the local building codes and obtain the proper work permits before starting any pool building project. Also make sure to install proper barriers and fencing around your pool, which is a particularly important consideration if you live with small children and/or animals.

6. Not reading swimming pool construction contracts before signing them. Don’t rush into any rash financial decision without carefully considering your options or asking the right questions of your builder. If your contractor doesn’t provide straight answers or explicitly lay out terms in writing, then it may be a sign that your pool contractor is pulling a fast one on you.

7. Not making the proper financial investment in the construction of your swimming pool. In this case, cheaper doesn’t always equate to better. Think of your pool as the long-term investment that it is and find a contractor who will do the job right the first time.

We bought our first and only hot tub (Tiger River Siberian) from Richard’s back in July 1999. Yes, we still have it. We’ve only had two issues during those 17 years. The first time was in 2008 when the heater crapped out, so we had to get a new one. The service tech from Richard’s offered us a used heater for a fraction of the cost. He assured me it was a good working heater. Hesitantly, i agreed to the new heater. That was 8 years ago and the heater is still working. Today, we had a tech come out because the spa wasn’t heating. I thought the heater died out again. Turns out we had a short in the spa wiring (not in the heater). The service tech (Angel) replaced the wiring for about $15 over the $169 service charge. Once again, the spa is heating. We’re now debating on whether we want to get another spa next Spring. We spent $6500 for our hot tub back in 1999. I know they’re a lot more expensive nowadays, but we’ll head to Richard’s if and when we do get one. Anyone know where I can find a coupon? 🙂

The owners have the biggest hearts and feel pride in every pool they build. The selection of hot tubs and the quality is truly the best. The showrooms are wonderful and make me want to hang around in the inviting atmosphere.

My experience began with an online inquiry that led to immediate contact even during the busy holiday season. The staff was courteous and professional and confirmed and kept their appointment to come to my home to evaluate my property and answer my questions of which hot tub could work best for my backyard. There was no high pressure tactics, the gentleman who came over asked appropriate questions of what I wanted and he placed me in the most appropriate tub based on what I desired. When due to a minor inventory error we found out that the tub we initially agreed upon was not in stock. Richard’s bent over backwards to accommodate me. As for arranging delivery and installation–seamless. When it came to educating me on hot tub maintenance, the gentleman was very patient and well informed. I would recommend this company, without reservation, to any one interested in acquiring a hot tub.
