We’ve now reached part three of our Pool and Spa Trends series. (Click here for parts one and two.) In the first two parts, we covered a few accessories that enhance the swimming pool or spa experience. On this occasion, however, we’re going to spend some time reviewing an option for homeowners who want a swimming pool but don’t quite the backyard space to accommodate one. For those people, their solution can be found in spools.

To be clear, the spools we’re talking about here are not to be confused with the cylinder upon which film or thread is wound. Rather, the word “spool” is a portmanteau, or blend, of “pool” and “spa.” Spools typically measure between 10 to 16 feet long and 6 to 8 feet wide. Roughly speaking, spools are approximately less than half the size of an in-ground, outdoor swimming pool and twice the length of a spa. Many homeowners prefer spools because they create an intimate atmosphere relative to pools or even spas.

One way in which a spool is like a spa is their use of strong jets to create swirling water that relaxes those inside it. The jets also create enough resistance for you to engage in aquatic therapy exercises. While the space within spools is limited when compared to conventional swimming pools, it can be a great best-of-both-worlds option for homeowners. For instance, a spool owner could use it as a swimming space in the day, and then use it to soothe sore or tight muscles at night.

Another benefit of spools is their inexpensiveness relative to in-ground swimming pools. For one, a spool doesn’t require as much digging and construction as a pool would. Moreover, spools are easier to clean and can be enjoyed year round regardless of the outside weather. In short, a spool is an ideal option for people who want both a pool and a spa, but can’t afford both and/or have the space to make them fit.

Rodney and David came to clean my pool filters, a job that takes me a whole day to do, they were in and out in a couple of hours, even brushed the pool and ran diagnostics, excellent job guys!

This April has been a wonderful month! We started off with the best company kick-off meeting ever. I was so impressed by the dedication of our Richard’s team members. Most of all, I was touched by the focus and drive that Julie and J.R. have to help us meet our goals. Keeping our team strong is their priority, and we feel it! Richard’s TBS really is a family. We work, grow, struggle, triumph, laugh, cry, and even share flues together. I’m proud to say I work for Richard’s, and can’t wait to see the wonderful backyards we will bring our customers next month. Happy May to you all!

Rodney did a great job coming out and helping get a problem with our in floor cleaning system…thank you Rodney!

“Buying a pool these days is like a vacation. It’s a book & plan-ahead process. But unlike a vacation…this investment doesn’t end!”
